things I find curious about japan [01]

21 07 2008

a. of young girls and fashion:

    a japanese girl will buy a pair of shoes she likes even if they are two sizes too small for her;

she will stand with the toes of her feet pointing inwards because it’s cuter

she will walk feigning a limp because this too is cuter (though I have my suspicions this may have something to do with point 1)

b. of litter and recycling:

the japanese citizen must separate his garbage into 4 different classifications: burnable, not burnable, cans and glass. (this at least in tokyo, I’ve heard other places have up to 25 different categories for garbage)

you do not take away your garbage just any day, you have to wait for “non-burnable garbage day” to do so. (I wonder how they manage in those other places with 25 different garbage)

still, you do not find a fucking garbage-bin in tokyo! there are plastic-bottle and can bins beside jihanki, but what if you want to throw away paper? I’m sick of carring my garbage around in my bag…

c. of trains

if you are ever late because of a train delay you can ask for a “tardiness certificate” at the station

this was borrowed from daniele’s blog. thanks a lot daniele!

[PBP]

3 07 2008

hi there!

I’m continuing yesterday’s post.

the day of my arrival, my two crazy roommates kidnapped me and took me to a night-club called [PBP] – that stands for “pink big pig” (you’ll see what I mean by clicking on the link). it’s the sort of place where you can eat and drink as much as you want while you listen to live music performances – the difference is that you do it under the nose of a “pink big revolving pig” . apparently some japanese friends of my roommates were playing that night.

their names are takurou and youhei, you can see them here:

I’ve tried to upload a better one, but for some reason it doesn’t work…

area and joyce, two girls form hongkong where there too. we took pictures with the boys – or I should say I took pictures of korin jumping on takuro… the poor thing was so embarrassed at first, but korin didn’t give a fuck, she kept kissing him on the cheek and asking the rest of us to take a photo. yohei is not so japanese though, he actually enjoys receiving attention from girls. they both sang horribly in my opinion, but don’t tell jen or korin, cause they’ll probably kill me…

here’s a song from youhei [kuruoshiku]

and from takurou [うたた寝ふれーばー] I don’t know how to pronounce that kanji, so I just wrote it in japanese, sorry :9

I chose both songs based on korin and jen’s criteria because I haven’t had time to listen to the whole CD yet, so I don’t really know if they’re the best ones…

after the songs a guy that did magic tricks came to our table – he sort of reminded me of yuho… but he was really good at magic – unlike yuho. he did some amazing things and ended up making balloon animals at korin’s request – yes, she never gives up. I don’t have a picture of the cute kuma-chan that he did for jen, or korin’s fake french poodle – which was suppossed  to be a lion – but there’s a picture of the pretty poor attempt at a totoro:

yes, that white-blue thingy is supposed to be a [totoro]– for those who don’t know how a real totoro looks like, click on the previous link. actually, I felt sorry for the guy when joyce requested a totoro… but japanese people don’t really know how to refuse, do they?

something that really surprised me from this place is that male waiters kneeled before you when coming to your table O.O I was thinking “yo, what are you doing on the floor man?”, but it seems in these type of places it’s normal. also, the bathrooms had a dressing room where you could change your make-up – I mean, for goodness’ sake, it even had cotton swabs and a hair drier!!!

oh! and toilets are like pieces of engineering. they are harder to understand than quantic physics and have more buttons than this keyboard… and when you sit on them it warms up your bum. I find it disturbing, as if the toilet was cleverer than me… -.-u

other pics of the night. the japanese guy being kissed by two crazy chicks is takurou. on the last pic, from left to right: me, jen, joyce, area and korin.

[日本に着いた!!- nihon ni tsuita!!!!]

2 07 2008

みんなさん 今晩は!日本でもう夕べです。

ok… where to begin? I’ll skip all the stuff about how long and boring the whole flight thing was and how uncomfortable all airplanes are.

the thing is I’m here! it took me about an hour and a half to get to 大崎駅 (おおさきえき), carrying a suitcase that weighted more than me, my big, heavy camera and a handbag with my laptop… my back and arms still hurt from that and I think I’ve got whiplash – though it probably has more to do with spending 11 hours on a plane…

Jen came to meet me at the station. she is french and a great fan of 嵐!yay!!! she is actually sort of crazy about aiba-chan. when I asked her which 嵐 member she liked best she took off her jacket and showed me her back. this is what I saw:

just for the record, what’s written on the t-shirt is this: “if you see this person, tell him Jen loves him.” she actually sent him a letter telling him to marry him and he read it in a radio program and replied!!! here’s the mediafire link to the archive. you don’t need to understand japanese to get the meaning actually, but I’ll try to post a briefing some other day.

http://www.mediafire.com/?llt5lg1sm1w

here’s the front side of the t-shirt -just in case you were wondering. and the girl inside the t-shirt is masaki-chan’s bride-to-be, Jen.

the front reads: “雅紀-ちゃん, YOU 結婚してください!(masaki-chan, YOU marry me! – 大野’s (おおの)phrase when they make them propose at 嵐の宿題くん (あらしのしゅくだいくん))

so you get the picture, right?

my house is in 西品川 にししながわ) - I’m not living at 戸越 (とごし) anymore, ざんねんだね。sorry about that alex, I’ll try to look for the temple though. I’m currently sleeping in the living-room, but it’s better than going to the guest house for 8 days and then back here. and it’s closer to 大崎駅 (おおさきえき)and 山の手 (やまのて)line, wee!!! I got my スイカ カード with 定期 (ていき) – commuting suica card. all thanks to ミキーさん who was very kind and filled in all the forms for me :). alright,  this is my house from the outside:

I’d like to make this first post longer because I haven’t even introduced korin yet, but it’s 1:40 in the morning and I’ve got class tomorrow、so I’m leaving it here.

I’ll attach these photos specially for you, alex, though I hope 明子ーちゃん appreciates them too. they were taken at 新宿駅 (shinjuku station) and are part of a cellphone campaign. enjoy! 楽しんで来って!
